So, you may be wondering then, in this reviewer's humble opinion: does Dragonflight, by Anne McCaffrey withstand the test of time?

This answer is probably not surprising to anyone who's read my reviews but no...and yes.

Dragonflight is ultimately a frustrating book because there are aspects of it that are genuinely great. And then there are aspects of it that are utterly abysmal. It would be so easy though for someone to pare away the messy and awful parts and make it into something amazing for modern readers.

I would kill for a Shadowhunters style adaptation that took these characters, setting, and plot and really started to dig into all of the problematic and fucked up aspects of the Weyr society.

Because they are a really fucked up society. They're horrible. They're parasites who leeched off the Lords for four hundred years. They take children and young adults, seemingly without any need for consent of them, their parents, or their Holds. Their culture is based around disgusting rape rituals to the point where that's how they decide their fucking leadership.

It's abhorrent.

The gender politics of this book are awful. Women are chattel. They're supposedly elevated to a high position, as Weyrwoman, but that essentially just means they're there to be available to the man whose dragon nails the Queen. Supposedly, they have some kind of domestic leadership of the Weyr, but the only time we ever see Lessa trying to do anything about that, we're told that F'lar's wing already has the food supply in hand.

Both Lessa and Mardra have a significant role in the Weyr leadership, but a lot of that seems to be because F'lar and T'ton choose to include them in their decision making. There's no indicator that they really have to. And R'gul certainly had no interest in consulting with Lessa when HE was in charge. It's not clear what exactly Kylara was supposed to be doing at Southern Weyr. We're told she was basically slacking off on her duties without clearly indicating what they actually are. Food's provided. They have everything they could want. What is she supposed to be doing again? Housework? Fuck that, the men can clean up after themselves.

The mating set up is disgusting. First, we have the women, most of whom are taken from the Holds, and it's not clear how much they're told about what will happen. Certainly Lessa had no idea. So, yay for unnecessary rape.

Then we have the implied child sexual abuse. Many of the male dragonriders are literally children. I vaguely recall, for example, that F'lar was thirteen when he Impressed Mnementh. They start flying in mating flights a YEAR after. As much as I hate F'lar, I don't want to think about the fact that he'd have taken part in these fucked up rituals as a child. No one deserves that.

And then there's the way that every woman who is mentioned as actually taking some control over her sexuality is demonized. Kylara has been lambasted with every insult under the sun, despite having, we're told, a temperament very suited to being a Weyrwoman. We're told that the Weyr has freer sexual mores, but every single male character seems to view Kylara with as much disgust as lust. And Jora, amidst her other multitude of sins, is "lecherous".

The physical abuse of Lessa, on top of everything else, is utterly unnecessary. It doesn't fit with the way F'lar and Lessa generally interact, and puts a dark stain on what is (initial mating ritual aside) a generally healthy and appealing partnership. And I suppose that would be okay, if that were the POINT. If we were supposed to understand that a relationship can be appealing in some ways and abusive in others. But the story doesn't do anything with this.

Essentially, we're not supposed to see F'lar as abusive, simply as a normally stoic man so caught up in his emotions that he can't help but shake her in fear and anger. That kind of bullshit trope may have been fine for old time romance novels, but it doesn't fly in the present day.

None of this shit holds up in the present day.

And yet...

And yet...

Lessa.

Lessa is amazing. She really is. She's strong, smart, a little ruthless. She's prickly, temperamental, and indomitable. She defies any and all expectation about what is possible, whether she's a slave or a dragonrider. She routinely does the impossible because she refuses to give up and let other people dictate what she does. She can be selfish, she can be petty, and she can be scary.

Lessa isn't just an amazing character for 1968, she's an amazing character today. I would be happy to see a hundred Lessas.

And in the sense that this book is Lessa's story: that we're watching Lessa's rise and triumph as she repeatedly succeeds in the face of men who tell her no, then yes, there is a thread of something good and powerful in there.

Shame about everything else in the novel.

Last time, Lessa came in like the cavalry bringing a whopping eighteen HUNDRED dragons to F'lar's doorstep. Hey, considering how it was Lessa who discovered that Queen's could fly, Lessa who discovered Time Travel, and Lessa who brought back the Weyrs: why can't SHE be the Weyrleader again?

Oh right, crappy gender politics. Alas.

We're in the home stretch now )

So, last time, Lessa went into the past and met some dragonriders that I didn't actually hate immediately! Who knew that was possible?

This time, of course, they'll be taking the great leap forward.

As the next chapters/parts are all very short and quick, I figure I'll do them together.

Honestly, I wouldn't do it )

So, last chapter, F'lar told Lessa not to do something and basically treated her like a child and was surprised when Lessa ignored him and did it anyway.

I support Lessa in this, because if she's right, she'll save all of Pern, but honestly, even if she was wrong, I'd support it because fuck F'lar.

I'm petty like that )

Thankfully we get to leave F'lar and Robinton's mutual love affair so that we can see what Lessa and F'nor are getting up to as they go back ten years to explore the Southern Continent.

To the South, and beyond! )

We're now in the last quarter of the book: the Cold Between. It's been an interesting ride so far.

When we left off, Lessa and F'lar were coming up with a plan only to be interrupted by F'nor-from-the-future, indicating that they do actually go through with their plan but it may not entirely work...

Time travel gets confusing.

On the plus side, there is LYTOL! )

Now, we've actually gotten to see the Thread in action, and we've also got a clearer idea of exactly how screwed the dragonriders are. On one hand, they're objectively terrible. On the other hand, they're finally earning their keep. And well, most of the rest of the Pernese people don't seem to be quite as terrible so I suppose I'm reasonably concerned about their fate.

So how screwed is screwed? These people are Phillips-heads. )

So now we get to see the dreaded Thread in all its glory, as Benden Weyr travels back a few hours in order to fight it.

Spoiler: Sadly, F'lar doesn't die

Maybe next time )

So we're finally to the point of the story where threadfall is eminent. It sounds like I'm complaining, but actually, I think that this part of the book is paced very well. Each chapter or section has shown us a different aspect of the preparation, and they've been pretty short too. So I don't feel like any of the story has dragged.

Really, for all my problems with this book, I feel like I could learn a lot from Ms. McCaffrey on how to more effectively pace my own stories. She really doesn't have wasted scenes. Like take for example Lessa's miserable time under R'gul's tutelage. We only actually see maybe three pages of it. One time, one argument. But it is very clear that this is something that's been going on for a very long time, and that Lessa is miserable and bored sick of it. Anne McCaffrey, while she can be wordy, has a really good grasp of "less is more" and "show not tell".

If only the book didn't have such dodgy sexual and gender politics. Oh, and spoiler: While F'lar actually managed to not get on my nerves in two whole chapters, he's going to be back in fine form today.

I almost missed saying 'Fuck you, F'lar' )

So last time, Ramoth laid her eggs, Lessa and F'lar finally managed to have an adult conversation with some interesting world-building, and F'lar ACTUALLY managed to act like a recognizably human being.

We haven't seen Thread yet, and we won't in this section either, but so far, the pacing is brisk enough, and these preparation sections short enough, that I don't feel like the story is dragging.

Honestly, I'm just happy to see F'lar acting like less of an asshole. He's still not good enough for Lessa by far, but it makes me a little less depressed by her prospects when he's somewhat tolerable.

More Preparation, More of F'lar maybe not being a complete asshole )
kalinara: An image of the robot Jedidiah from the 1970s Tomorrow People TV Show (Default)
[personal profile] kalinara
So last time, Lessa figured out fucking time travel. This chapter is a lot of talking about that. We also get a fair bit of worldbuilding information, and miraculously, F'lar doesn't piss me off for an entire section.

Amazing, right?
I'm not sure how this happened )
kalinara: An image of the robot Jedidiah from the 1970s Tomorrow People TV Show (Default)
[personal profile] kalinara
So in part one and two, we learned that Dragonriders are the fucking worst. Perhaps this part will change our minds (spoiler: it doesn't. Lessa is great though.)

And we're off! )
kalinara: An image of the robot Jedidiah from the 1970s Tomorrow People TV Show (Default)
[personal profile] kalinara
So this last section is interesting because for the first time, our viewpoint character isn't F'lar or Lessa. Instead, we follow a new person: Larad, Lord of Telgar.

Larad is the leader of the Lords who are revolting against the Weyr. And honestly, given what we've seen of the Dragonriders so far, I'm kind of cheering for him. At least he's not a rapist, as far as we know.

Honestly, I'm on the Lords' side here )
kalinara: An image of the robot Jedidiah from the 1970s Tomorrow People TV Show (Default)
[personal profile] kalinara
So our next section of Dragonflight is F'lar's point of view. Because that's exactly what I want to read after the rape of the only character that I actually give two shits about: events from the rapist's point of view.

It's not like Lessa might have a perspective on these events at all. It's not like she just woke up after having sex for the first time ever, with a man that she had no intention of sleeping with prior to being overcome by the psychic element of the mating flight, something that she had no warning about...

Nope, let's ignore that so F'lar can bask in his smug triumph.

Fuck you, F'lar.

Behold the cloud of smug )
kalinara: An image of the robot Jedidiah from the 1970s Tomorrow People TV Show (Default)
[personal profile] kalinara
So we've reached the section that infuriates me the most about the entire book. At least so far.

This is the section with Ramoth's mating flight. And please take the content warning very very seriously.

Rape Discussed Within )
kalinara: An image of the robot Jedidiah from the 1970s Tomorrow People TV Show (Default)
[personal profile] kalinara
So we're starting part 2 of Dragonflight, which is also called Dragonflight. I believe that this is the story "Dragonrider" which won Anne McCaffrey the Nebula Award, but don't quote me on that.

At this point, Lessa has her dragon and is now (or at least, in training to be) Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr. And it's kind of a rotten deal, really. Dragons are awesome, but dragonriders? Are not.

Seriously, they're all terrible )
kalinara: An image of the robot Jedidiah from the 1970s Tomorrow People TV Show (Default)
[personal profile] kalinara
So we last left off with Fax getting his just desserts and Lessa abandoning her dream of ruling Ruatha to go off and partner with a dragon.

Now, granted, I don't begrudge her that. Dragons are awesome, even if the dragonriders in this book are not, but I would have also loved the story of Lessa figuring out how to be a Holder Lord after ten years in slavery. The advantage to this scenario is: no fucking F'lar. But it is what it is.

But let's get on to the dragons!!! )
kalinara: An image of the robot Jedidiah from the 1970s Tomorrow People TV Show (Default)
[personal profile] kalinara
So, last time, if you recall, Fax and the dragonriders were going to Ruatha, Lessa is already in Ruatha. That means we're about to have both viewpoint characters at the same place at the same time!

Please kill F'lar, Lessa.

In which one of the assholes I hate might actually die! )

So last time, we met our protagonists. Well. Kind of. We learned that Lessa is possibly implicitly a serial killer while F'lar is a douchebag. I'm not sure what it says about me that I find the former more forgivable than the latter. I think it's just that I'm more willing to accept collateral damage from a kitchen slave lashing out with the only weapon that she has than I am seeing a man of relative privilege look down his nose at abuse victims.

Heck, I forgot to point this out in part one, but when Lytol tries to urge F'lar to do something about Fax, he says "he fancies himself as good as dragonmen."

Fax is a rapist and a murderer, who has beheaded women and children. And Lytol seems to believe that this is because he fancies himself as good as dragonmen.

What the fuck does that say about dragonmen?

In which F'lar continues to suck but Lessa is kind of awesome )
