So last time, things took a turn for the horrific. Or at least B-Movie, monster sex dungeon type of horrific. More importantly though, Drizzt graduated from the Academy and was given something of an ultimatum by his mother.

Rather understandably, that was the cut off point for the third part of the book. That's fair, I don't think you could really top that in terms of the climax.

So once more, we get a little interlude in Drizzt's own words to mark the transition to Part Four. And once more, I'm sufficiently lazy that I don't really feel like reviewing more than this tonight.

...I thought I was mostly joking when I referred to Drizzt and Guenhwyvar's meeting in romantic terms. But this whole interlude appears to be a love poem written by Drizzt to his magical panther.

"What eyes are these that see
The pain I know in my innermost soul?
What eyes are
these that see
The twisted strides of my kindred,
Led on in the wake of toys unbridled:
Arrow, bolt, and sword tip?

There are admittedly some references to padded paws and sheathed claws, but still, verses like the above, and this:

Face to face, my mirror;
Reflection in a still pool by light.
Would that I might keep that image
Upon this face mine own.
Would that I might keep that heart
Within my breast untainted.
Hold tight to the proud honor of your spirit,

really does sound like Drizzt is in love with his cat. Hey, Tesla has his pigeon, Drizzt has his cat.

I mean, look, I know eventually Drizzt is going to get with Catti-brie, but I don't think I remember him EVER being quite so romantically effusive. And there are a LOT of polymorph spells and potions in this setting.

What I'm saying, Drizzt, is go fuck your panther and leave the teenage girl alone.
